Dragons Edge Loons, 1-0
DAYTON - Dayton starting pitcher Amir Garrett and relievers Nick Howard and Alejandro Chacin combined on a seven-hit shutout as the Dragons defeated the Great Lakes Loons 1-0 on Wednesday night. A crowd of 8,275 attended the game at Fifth Third Field as the Dragons avoided a sweep of the three-game series. The only run of the game came in the bottom of the first inning. Dayton’s Ronald Bueno singled to right field with one out and went to second on a hit to left by Alex Blandino. Bueno advanced to third on Phillip Ervin’s foul pop to the first baseman, and Robert Ramirez followed with a two-out single to right to drive in Bueno.Garrett worked the first five innings to earn the win, allowing two hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Howard replaced Garrett to start the sixth and pitched out of tough jams in each of his first two innings. In the sixth, the Loons put runners at second and third with no one out, but Howard worked out of trouble. In the seventh, Great Lakes had men at first and second with no one out when Webster Rivas hit a deep drive to center field. Phillip Ervin raced back and made the catch, then threw to the relay man, Bueno, who fired to first before Josmar Cordero could return to the base for a double play. Howard got Spencer Navin to ground to shortstop to end the threat. In the eighth, the Loons had runners at first and second with two outs, but Chacin replaced Howard and struck out Paul Hoenecke to end the inning. Then in the ninth, Cordero singled with one out and Rivas doubled, moving pinch runner Malcolm Holland to third. But Chacin struck out Navin for the second out before Jacob Scavuzzo drilled a high, deep drive to left field that was caught by Dayton’s Jon Matthews against the fence to end the game. The save was Chacin’s 16th of the season and his 11th since July 1. He has allowed just one run over his last 15 relief appearances covering 18.1 innings.Dragons pitchers allowed just two earned runs in the three-game series, including the first game that went 12 innings. All three games in the series were decided by one run.The Dragons finished with six hits. Bueno, Blandino, and Ramirez each had two.The Dragons (22-23) travel to Bowling Green, Kentucky to open a four-game series with the Bowling Green Hot Rods (20-25) on Thursday at 8:05 p.m. EDT. Dan Langfield (3-2, 3.88) will pitch for the Dragons against D.J. Slaton (0-2, 8.76).
