Dragons Notch 2nd Straight Series Sweep; Winning Streak at 6
Bowling Green, Ky.--Jose Ortiz and Carlton Daal belted home runs to lead the Dayton Dragons to an 8-3 victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Sunday afternoon. The win was the Dragons sixth straight and gave them their second straight sweep of a three-game series.
The Dragons jumped out to an early lead in the second inning when Jon Matthews doubled off the left field fence and Ortiz followed with a two-run home run to left. Ortiz's first homer of the year made it 2-0.
After Bowling Green answered with one run in the bottom of the second, Daal connected on his first professional career home run in the third, a shot to left field, that made it 3-1. Bowling Green again responded with one run in the bottom of the third to make it 3-2.
The Dragons pushed across single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead to 5-2. After Bowling Green scored one run in the bottom of the fifth, the Dragons broke the game open with three in the eighth, keyed by a two-run triple by Jamodrick McGruder to make it 8-3 and close out the scoring.
Dragons starting pitcher Dan Langfield worked the first four innings, allowing two runs on three hits with four walks and six strikeouts before reaching his pitch limit. Tony Amezcua replaced Langfield to start the fifth and worked three innings, allowing one run on four hits. He walked no one and struck out four. Amezcua (2-2) was credited with the win. Zack Weiss tossed the final two innings, allowing no runs on one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.
The Dragons collected nine hits. Matthews was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base to extend his hitting streak to 11 straight games. He is now batting .351 for the year. McGruder also had two hits and a walk. Daal's home run extended his hitting streak to eight straight games.
The Dragons have outscored their opponents 38-11 over their six-game winning streak.
