Dragons Earn Second Straight Win, Take 3-1 Decision

Dayton, Ohio—Starting pitcher Ismael Guillon fired six scoreless innings as the Dayton Dragons defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 3-1 on Saturday night.  The Dragons improved to 2-1 on the season with the win and dropped West Michigan to 1-2.  A crowd of 8,352 attended the game at Fifth Third Field.

Guillon, who led the Midwest League in both walks and strikeouts in 2013 with the Dragons, issued only one walk over his six innings of work.  He surrendered just three hits and struck out six to earn the victory.

The Dragons took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, getting three consecutive singles from Jeff Gelalich, Daniel Mateo, and Tanner Rahier after a lead-off walk.

The Whitecaps did not score until the eighth inning.  Dragons reliever Daniel Wright replaced Guillon to start the seventh and struck out all three batters he faced.  Joel Bender took over to start the eighth and gave up a pair of singles before being replaced by Alejandro Chacin with runners at second and third and one out.  Chacin walked the first batter he faced to load the bases, and Jose Zambrano followed with a hit up the middle.  One run scored on the play, but Dragons center fielder Beau Amaral threw out Curt Powell at the plate to preserve the lead.  Chacin struck out Wynton Bernard to end the threat.

The Dragons scored once in the bottom of the eighth on Rahier’s sacrifice fly to make it 3-1, and Chacin pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out three in the inning to earn the save.

The Dragons had just three hits but held on for their second straight win.  Rahier drove in two runs to lead the attack.

The Dragons host the Whitecaps on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. to close out the series.  Amir Garrett (1-3, 6.88 with Dayton in 2013) will start for the Dragons against West Michigan’s Austin Kubitza.  All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at wone.com and through the Dragons Mobile App
