Family of Walmart Shooting Suspect Sees Part of Video of Incident

BEAVERCREEK -- An attorney for the family of John H. Crawford III has reviewed security tapes from the night Crawford was shot and killed by Beavercreek police inside the local Walmart store. John H. Crawford Jr., the suspect's father, also viewed the footage.

"It was unbelievable, that is all I could tell you," Crawford said about watching his son being shot in the video. "I pray that no one has to ever go through what we're going through. It's unconscionable."

Crawford Jr. and attorney Michael Wright watched about four minutes of the security video with Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, whose office is investigating the shooting.

"After viewing the video it is confirmed that we believe that John H. Crawford III was murdered," said Wright. "This was an unarmed man holding a BB-gun getting shot and killed while a customer inside of a store."

"I hope that Mr. Attorney General does his duty and we'll just have to wait and see," Crawford added.

DeWine has instruct those who have seen the video not to disclose specific details.

"When everyone sees this video it will illuminate the issues of this particular case. Mr. Crawford was doing nothing wrong," Wright said.

"But then again who knows, only the cop knows, what it was for him to do that," commented West Dayton resident Lillie Crowder about the video and circumstances.

For the Miami Valley community, releasing the video of the shooting means answering questions.

"All the video should be (released), why are they holding it?" said Thomas Goldsberry outside the Beavercreek Walmart.

"It's hard for the general public not having seen it or been there to know what else might be involved really," said Laura Roby also outside the store.

Earlier coverage:

DAYTON -- The family of a man shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting in a Walmart see part of the video from the night of that shooting for the first time.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine released about 4 to 6 minutes of video showing John Crawford III being shot at the Beavercreek Walmart store and after seeing the video, attorneys for the Crawford family say their opinion is that it was murder.

"After viewing the video it is confirmed what we believe John H. Crawford III was murdered while he was a customer at Walmart," said attorney Michael Wright.

Wright said John Crawford III was doing nothing wrong when this occurred and he was threatening no one. "What we saw was an unjustifiable killing of John Crawford. Call it murder, call it what you want, it's the unjustified killing of this man."

Crawford was shot and killed by Beavercreek police after being seen with a pellet rifle in Walmart on August 5.

Crawford's father said he felt numb after seeing the video.

"Unbelievable. I pray that no one ever has to go through what we are going through," Crawford said. "Unconscionable. I saw my son getting murdered by law enforcement."

A grand jury is expected to hear evidence in this case in two weeks.  Crawford says he believes when all the evidence is presented, there will be justice for his son.
