UPDATE: West Carrollton Man's Wife Upset by North Korea Appeal

WEST CARROLLTON (AP) -- The wife of a local man detained in North Korea is upset about his comments that he and another American will soon be put on trial.

The attorney for Jeffrey Edward Fowle's family said Friday his wife hadn't seen the video, but had read news reports about his comments appealing for U.S. help to get them home.

Lebanon lawyer Timothy Tepe says the comments are very upsetting to Fowle's wife. Tepe says he and the family are still gathering information and expect to make a statement Monday.

U.S. Rep. Mike Turner says he is "very concerned" about the situation. The Dayton Republican says he's in communication with the State Department. He says former Dayton congressman and U.S. diplomat Tony Hall is trying to help.

West Carrollton Man Detained in North Korea Seeks U.S. Help

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) -- Two Americans charged with "anti-state" crimes in North Korea say in a video that they expect to be tried soon and possibly receive long prison terms, and appeal for help from the U.S. government.

The two men, Matthew Todd Miller and local man Jeffrey Edward Fowle, also apologized to North Korea and the United States, saying they had committed crimes. It wasn't clear whether they were speaking on their own initiative, or whether the statements were coerced.

They made the comments in a video shot Friday by a local AP Television News crew. The crew was taken to a location to meet the detained Americans after repeated requests to North Korean authorities to see them.

Rep. Mike Turner, R-Dayton, said he remains very concerned about Fowle's detainment in North Korea.

"My office was in contact with the State Department this morning and we will remain in constant communication as we continue to monitor the situation," Turner said. "I am very thankful for Ambassador Tony Hall, one of the foremost experts on North Korea, and his ongoing efforts to provide assistance regarding this incredibly unfortunate situation."

Sen. Sherrod Brown says he is outraged the two Americans are still detained and soon tried in what he says is a "jurisdiction lacking a fair legal system."

"My office has been in regular contact with State Department officials and I will continue to urge the Department to do everything it can to secure their release," Brown said in a statement. "The North Korean government should act immediately to release them so that they can return to the United States and their families."

North Korea has accused the Americans of committing hostile acts that violated their status as tourists.
