Disabled Woman says Health Care Aid Robbed Her
DAYTON -- A severely disabled woman was taken advantage of by the woman hired to take care of her.
Charmin DeWitt says her health care aid stole almost a thousand dollars from her secret safe this week. And now she's reached out to Dayton police to help her get justice.
The 45-year-old woman depends on health care aids to get through the day.
"I feel violated. I thought she cared, until she took from me. I didn't think she would ever take from me. 'Cause I can't trust people. I have to depend on people to do things for me," DeWitt said from her home Friday.
On Wednesday, after her aid left for the day, a family member noticed Charmin's safe was open. Charmin says $800 was missing.
"I've been saving that money since I've been at the nursing home. It's a whole lot of money," DeWitt explained. "She was the only one I gave it to other than my family."
Charmin keeps the key around her neck at all times. Charmin's boyfriend William lives in the same assisted living apartments in Dayton.
"It really made me mad for someone to steal from her, take advantage of her. She too good a person for that," William Laird declared passionately. "It's sad that this girl works for her and she couldn't trust her."
Charmin says the woman had worked for her for four months and they had become friends.
"She said she loved me and I would never take from you and all this stuff she was saying," DeWitt said softly. "You gotta just be careful. Be careful, because you never know."
Charmin and the alleged theft will meet in court on Tuesday.
Dayton Police and the aid's employer are investigating the incident.
