Beavercreek City Schools to Provide Benefits to Legally Married Same-Sex Couples
BEAVERCREEK -- Beavercreek City Schools is now allowing employees who are part of a same-sex couple and whose marriage is legal in another state, to enroll in medical and dental benefits.
Same-sex marriage is currently illegal in Ohio.
The school district administration issued a letter August 17 announcing the change in policy.
"I don't think it's a big deal personally, but I can see how that could upset some people," said West Carrollton resident Josh Hofoni.
Beavercreek is the newest district in the Miami Valley to allow same-sex spouses benefits coverage. Dayton Public and Huber Heights City Schools both already provide similar benefits coverage to same-sex couples and employees.
"If you live in the same place together and you pay the same bills together, you should enjoy the same rights," Hofoni added.
"I'm certainly not going to yank my kids out of school for it," said mom Miranda Kroger.
Beavercreek City Schools employees who are same-sex spouses can enroll in medical and dental benefits.
The administration said in an announcement the change in policy now puts them in compliance with their current Equal Opportunity Employment policy, which states, "The Board of Education does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex (including sexual orientation and transgender identity,) disability, age, religion, military status, ancestry, genetic information, or any other legally protected category, in its programs, activities, including employment opportunities."
"It shouldn't matter if you're a teacher, you're still doing the same amount of work whether you're gay or straight," Josh Hofoni said.
"I think the taxpayers should know everything about where their money goes and what it's being contributed to," said Miranda Kroger.
Reporter Kelly May went to the Beavercreek City Schools Administration offices to get answers about the policy change. Both the Superintendent and Director of Human Resources declined to comment.
