Sunglass Safety: Which Pairs to Avoid Buying
CENTERVILLE-- Are you wearing the right pair of sunglasses? Before you pack your bag and head to the pool or park, dermatologists are warning which sunglasses are more likely to age the skin on your face.
"Oh yeah, definitely don't want the wrinkles!" said Sandy Coletto while she soaked in the sunshine at Centerville Activities Water Park.
Experts say that wrinkles, brown spots, even skin cancer around your eyes can be linked to what sunglasses you wear.
"The old aviator sunglasses with the metal frames, even though they may be in fashion they aren't always the best for medical purposes and cosmetic purposes," said Dermatologist Matt Bakos, adding that the popular metal frames attract and reflect more light around your eyes.
Bakos said squinting causes wrinkles, so eliminating squinting will keep wrinkles at bay.
"The ones that we prefer are the ones with big plastic frames that fit closely around your face and kind of wrap around," Bakos said. He added it's also important for the plastic to fit around your face, so fewer UV rays can reach and damage sensitive skin around your eyes.
"If you get one significant sun or sunburn we see brown spots happen in just one exposure," said Bakos, "I think the best scenario would be to go to one of the local stores that sells sunglasses or even the local optometrist and ask them what would be best for your face."
"I wear them when I want to be fun or festive," said Justine Worthington about the sunshine orange colored pair of sunglasses she wore to the Centerville Park.
She admitted to choosing style over eye safety, but after hearing the tips from the dermatologist, "that should concern me considering my history with my eyes. I have terrible eyesight to begin with... I had no idea," Worthington said.
Bakos also suggested buying sunglasses with a sun protection factor of 50.
