Health or Wealth? One Man Took His Life Into His Own Hands
BELLBROOK -- Running a multimillion dollar company might sound like a dream to some, but one local man gave it all up for his health.
These days, Bill Diederich trades in his three-piece suit and tie for a soccer jersey.
"Very excited to have dad home for the summer, very excited to have him around to watch all these World Cup games," said Bill Diederich.
It's time spent with dad that didn't happen all that often before.
"I worked a lot but it almost didn't seem like work," said Diederich.
Bill, like many of us, was part of corporate America for 25 years.
"My identity was so wrapped up in what I was doing that it was very important for me to be successful commercially, and I let that be a bigger priority than my health," said Diederich.
He neglected his health so much that it eventually got the better of him.
"I actually ended up going to the hospital one day, in an ambulance from work because I had some pain in my chest and I felt some compression, and I thought I was having a heart attack, and that was kind of the wake up call for me," said Diederich.
Bill figured out it was the stress at work and lack of exercise that was taking a toll on his body.
"Stress leads to poor sleep, which leaves you tired, decreases your will power, hurts your dieting ability and usually makes you gain weight as well," said Dr. Harvey Hahn of Kettering Health Network.
Hahn has seen it too many times in his office.
"You can't change a lot of things by worrying about it, so worrying, thinking, replaying things that happened before, is not going to change the situation you're in," Hahn said.
So Bill is taking this shot, and taking matters into his own hands.
"I've been so focused on the successful sale of the company being the outcome I was trying to create, now I needed to find that goal that I was going to drive my future," said Diederich.
It's a new future that's now possible because his total focus is now on his health.
But the decision to leave behind his company and friends who are more like family wasn't an easy one.
"I have a real clarity that I did the right thing, if that makes sense, difficult decision but I know I did the right thing," said Diederich.
It's a decision Bill says even you can make.
"It's as little as 20 minutes a day is all it takes for you to establish a healthy lifestyle, and there's nobody that can't afford to dedicate 20 minutes a day to their own health," said Diederich.
Bill is now challenging himself to lose 30 pounds before the American Heart Association's Heart Walk in just less than 90 days.
It's a challenge he says he'll win.
