UPDATE: Troopers Describe Fatal I-675 Crash
CLARK COUNTY -- The Springfield post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol has released details about the series of events that led up to a Fairborn man's death.
According to troopers, Chay DeMint, 21, was merging onto I-675 southbound from the westbound I-70 ramp. He lost control of the 2002 Dodge Dakota, drove off the left side of the highway and struck a cement bridge wall. The pickup came to rest partially in the road.
DeMint got out of the truck, which caught fire. He walked to the passenger's side of the Dakota.
A 2008 Ford F-150, driven by Gregory McQueen Jr., 28, of New Carlisle struck DeMint's pickup, which then struck DeMint, who was in the road.
DeMint was pronounced dead at the scene. McQueen was transported to Soin Medical Center in Beavercreek with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
CLARK COUNTY -- A Fairborn man survives one accident, only to die in another crash moments later. The scene is under investigation.
It happened around 10:30 Thursday night on I-675 South just south of Spangler Road.
The driver who hit the man was taken to the hospital, he is expected to survive. But 21-year-old Chay Demint was killed on the scene. Troopers say the fatal crash could have been avoided.
Two trucks were involved in this crash on I-675. The Post Commander with the Ohio State Highway Patrol says Demint was in a black Dodge Dakota truck heading south when he lost control. When he hit the median, his truck caught on fire and escaped the flames just in time.
After the crash he ran into the middle of the highway. Troopers say a witness pulled over to help and warned Demint to get off of the road but he wouldn't move. At the time another driver in a truck was heading south on I-675. That's when the collision occurred that killed Demint.
Investigators say they are not sure if the driver hit Demint with his truck or if the driver hit the other truck pushing that into Demint.
This morning, investigators are working to see if either driver was impaired at the time of the crash.
Right now, police are not releasing the name of the man being treated at the hospital, but he is expected to be OK.
CLARK COUNTY -- Ohio State Highway Patrol Troopers have identified the victim of a deadly crash on I-675 at I-70, at Chay Demint, 21 of Fairborn.
Trooper say Demint was driving southbound on 675, when he lost control of his black Dodge Dakota truck and hit the median barrier. His truck then caught fire, but he was able to escape.
A witness tells troopers he saw the crash and saw Demint get out of his truck, but then, he says Demint stood in the middle of the road. Shortly after, the witness tells troopers a driver in a white truck hit Demint's vehicle. Right now trooper say it's not clear if Demint was hit and killed by his own truck or that white truck.
OSP Springfield Post Commander Brian Aller said the area is not well lighted, and it's possible the driver of the white truck didn't see the crash.
"There are some lights here, but right on top of the Interstate 675 at 70, there's very little lighting. and it's obviously dark out, it's a black truck, so it'd probably be easy to miss."
The driver of that white truck was taken to Soin Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
