Property Values Drop In Montgomery County; County Offers Help
MONTGOMERY COUNTY -- You'll soon be getting a letter in the mail in Montgomery County about how the value of your property has probably dropped.
The county auditor's office has recently finished re-evaluating the properties, and the numbers have county leaders concerned.
There's been a 4% drop in value, and that's a billion dollar loss.
It's a number no one likes to hear.
"We know when vacant properties are near other properties they hurt the property values, and that's why we're seeing a lot of these numbers in the City of Dayton particularly," Mayor Nan Whaley, City of Dayton.
"It looks really bad on the neighborhood, just being a big eyesore," Hailee Broughton.
Broughton has lived in this house for the past six years, and it sits right next door to a vacant home on Dayton's East Side.
"They won't do anything with it and it's been messing up the whole neighborhood," said Broughton.
While it's boarded up and has some broken windows you'll notice the grass has been cut.
"We've been mowing the lawn over there and just taking the weeds out of the grass so we can get it to look better," said Broughton.
That's because Broughton and her family know the value of property, but for this past year's re-evaluation tens of thousands of homeowners will see a drop in what their home is worth.
"70% of residential property owners in Montgomery County will see some decrease in the value of their property," said Karl Keith, Montgomery County Auditor.
It's a figure that Broughton's not happy with.
"That's why everybody thinks Dayton is so bad because nobody takes care of what they need to take care of," said Broughton.
But the city says it's something they're working on.
"We know that this is an issue and we've been aggressively trying to attack vacant and abandoned properties over the past 6 years," said Mayor Whaley.
Once you get the letter in the mail you can sit down with county leaders and talk to them about the value of your home, to do that just call (937) 853-5700 to make an appointment.
