Teen's Email Prompts Mayor to Make Road Safer
CENTERVILLE -- A stretch of road is about to be much safer for drivers thanks to the efforts of a 13-year-old boy.
East Rahn Road near Applecreek Road has been the site of multiple crashes, and a fatality in April 2013.
"I think the guy was speeding," said 13-year-old Andrew Hornick, who at such a young age has already seen three major crashes in front of his home.
On Memorial Day weekend of 2014, there was a motorcycle crash. It was the last straw for the teen, who decided it was time for a change.
"So like this person, when he's coming around I want to make sure that he sees that it's a turn, especially at night time, because that's when all of [the crashes] happened," Andrew explained.
"He just started saying they really ought to put reflective lights or reflective paint or something on those curves," said Andrew's mom Lisa, "And my husband says, 'Well why don't you email the mayor!'"
So Andrew did. He emailed his idea to have reflectors on the curb of his street to Centerville Mayor Mark Kingseed, who responded right away.
"I was just really touched that he was comfortable enough to get in touch with me," Kingseed said, "And I was just happy that we were able to get on top of it so quickly and move so quickly on it."
Just two weeks after the email conversation, Centerville engineers have put the 13 year old's concern into action.
Andrew's parents and his hometown couldn't be more pleased.
"He's kind of like that," said Lisa, "He and all of his friends they're helpers, that's the way they are. We're pretty proud of him!"
"It's the way that it's supposed to work!" Kingseed added.
"It just feels good," Andrew said.
Reflectors will be installed on Tuesday, June 10, along with larger reflective road signs.
