Community Reacts to Miamisburg Man Being Held By North Korea

MORAINE -- The Miami Valley and the country are stunned as a  Miamisburg father of three is being detained in North Korea. The authoritarian country's state-run news says his offense was leaving a bible in a hotel room.

Jeffrey Edward Fowle of Miamisburg traveled to North Korea on April 29th as part of a tour. By mid May he was detained by the Korean government, accused of breaking the laws of the republic.

"It seems like a risky thing to go there in the first place and to do something you know is against their government policies," Miamisburg's Robert Large reacts t hearing the news.

Family attorney tells us Fowle was not in North Korea on a mission for his church. He was there because he simply wanted to visit despite a travel warning from the government last month strongly advising against visiting the authoritarian country.

"Its kind of our freedom of speech you know going to other countries you should be able to take what you want," Miamisburg's Rose Underwood responds to the shocking details.

The move by the communist nation to detain him is viewed a political move by experts. Fowle is the third American citizen currently being held in North Korea.

"You wonder whether they're going to offer them all together in order to negotiate some sort of treaty or build some sort of relationship so we can lessen our sanctions. We'll have to wait-and-see," Prof. Mark Caleb Smith, Cedarville University.

Fowle's family has been advised not to talk to media. We've learned little about the family here in the Miami Valley who did not accompany the 56 year old on his trip.

Fowle has worked for the City of Moraine street maintenance department for at least two decades. His wife, a Russian native, Tatayana, is a Moraine hairdresser. The couple has three young children.

Fowle's attorney says his family will issue an official statement on Monday. Meanwhile national leaders are gathering more information before any type of decisions are made

MIAMISBURG -- A Miamisburg man is being held in North Korea after he left a Bible in the hotel room where he was staying.

Jeffrey Edward Fowler of Miamisburg traveled to North Korea on April 29 as a part of a tour group, but Korean officials are now detaining him for breaking the laws of the republic.

Fowle's family members will be making a public statement on Monday but no sooner because of the sensitivity of the issue. We have learned that Fowle is a long time employee of the city of Moraine street department.  City officials in Moraine say they have also been asked not to comment on the situation by the family's attorney.

Fowle's wife, a Russian native and hairdresser in Moraine and their children apparently did not travel with Fowle to North Korea. His church Urbancrest of Lebanon, Ohio say he was not on a mission trip. He just wanted to visit North Korea.

Area residents have mixed feelings on Fowle's trip to North Korea. Some say he should have heeded the United States warnings about staying away from North Korea because of the high tensions between our countries. But others say it's our freedom to travel wherever we want to go and also take whatever you want to take with us. Rose Underwood says we should be allowed the same privileges in their country that we allow them to have in ours.
