Flood Cars: How to Spot a Lemon
DAYTON -- After Friday's storms that brought flash flooding to parts of the Miami Valley, Brad Hamilton and his staff at Collision Center of Dayton have seen their share of damaged cars. Most of those still water logged were around the Dayton Mall.
"I've seen five, I've got three more on my schedule. Out of those, I have one that we're repairing, everything else is a total loss," said Hamilton.
Beyond the interior damage from all that water. You can only imagine the smell. The mold's already set in.
At the Collision Center of Dayton, they' will only fix extremely minor water damage because there's too much at stake: our lives.
"I personally won't fix a flood car. There's too much liability involved. Six months down the road, you know the corrosion inside these modules because of all the computers," Hamilton explained.
But for other places that do restore flooded cars, a really good repair job can make it hard to detect there's been any flooding at all.
If you're buying a car, the best thing to do is ask your seller point blank if there's been any damage... dealers are forced to disclose that. Do a search for a report on the VIN number. And if you're able, have a mechanic go through it - inside the door panel can be a tell tale sign.
"You can see the actual water line inside there. If they don't get inside there to clean or spray some undercoating to cover that up; and most places don't do that's they're already trying to do it relatively cheap."
So if you ever find yourself flooded out, and your car hasn't been totaled, you will want to ask some more questions.
We found out most insurance companies will send out an assessor to take a look at the damage, and they will likely total your car. But some companies, like American General, do it automatically if water reaches the lower console.
