New Inclusive Playground Opens For Kids of All Abilities
CLARK COUNTY-- New in the city of Springfield's Snyder Park, a playground designed for kids of all abilities to enjoy. The park opened to the public on Wednesday.
"The doctors actually told us when he was born that he wouldn't live past four, so he's a miracle," laughed mother Tina Shaffer at the park opening. She got another miracle Wednesday afternoon-- watching her two young children play together in the same public park.
"It's really amazing that they care enough to bring that here-- this here," she said.
"The money just flowed in," said Andy Bell from the Springfield Rotary, "So amazing we had to cut the campaign off and tell people not to give anymore because everyone wanted to participate in this."
The Springfield Rotary Club gave forty percent of the $484,000 raised for construction and improvements.
The playground was built with ramps wide enough for wheelchairs, wider slides, swings that have seat belts, and a safe, seated merry go round.
The ground is made of a rubber composite, and is flat so that wheelchairs can roll just as easily as kids can run.
Fifteen year old Clark County teen Preston Milton was the inspiration for the project. He has muscular dystrophy and he didn't have much to say about the park opening, but he did have input in it's design.
"It's a great feeling I know for me to be able to see my child- when I watched him go up and down the ramp and just be able to do things- I didn't think were possible," said Preston's mother Christina Williams.
Watching her son and daughter play together brought Tina Shaffer to tears.
Her son Landon can't speak because of his rare disease, but Tina spoke from her heart, saying, "I'm a tearful person anyway-- he made me that way-- but just for people to care about my kid that much that they want to do something like that for him and for the other kids that are like him-- its special."
