How to be a Good Witness When a Crime is Committed

MIAMI TOWNSHIP -- Nine robberies in less than one week and Dayton Police have dubbed the men the "ghost" robbers.

And now, they may have struck again overnight, twice!

"They sneak around the business, they kind of hide behind dumpsters when cars pass and then they finally make their move and do the actual robbery," said Sgt. Moises Perez, Dayton Police Department.

Miami Township Police were on the scene of a robbery at the Meijer gas station Friday morning.

While they haven't said it is connected to the others this past week, they believe there are similarities.

And with the brazen stick-up just before rush hour, they're concerned.

"When you look at something like this, it's kind of the act of a desperate person, especially coming out at 6:30 in the morning, something happening during broad daylilght hours, you're starting to get pretty bold at that point," Sgt. Paul Nienhaus, Miami Township Police Department.

"It can happen whenever you can be at the gas station and it juSt gets held up, wrong place wrong time," said Drew Schindler.

If you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, don't drop everything, police say the best thing you can do is keep yourself safe.

"The best safe practice is to cooperate with the robber," said Sgt. Perez, "You don't want to get him excited don't make any sudden moves, don't threaten him."

If you happen to see bad guys like these, police say be the best witness you can be.

"A direction of travel, vehicle description, those are the important things that we would want to know," said Sgt. Jay Phares, Miami Township POlice Department.

Look for tattoos, scars, moles, a limp, anything unusual, like cologne, alcohol,  an unusual voice, but more importantly...

"Don't try to be a hero on this, don't put yourself in harm," said Sgt. Phares.

Something else police suggest, is writing down everything you saw and heard immediately after it happened... So you won't forget.
