TOWN HALL RECAP: Same-Sex Marriage
DAYTON -- Should same-sex marriage be allowed in the state of Ohio? That was the topic up for debate, at the ABC 22/FOX 45 Town Hall discussion Thursday evening.
With a panel of experts and an array of audience members, the goal was to get both sides of the issue to weigh in on current laws.
"Why are we trying to differentiate between marriage and civil union? Doesn't civil union accomplish everything that the gay community wants," asked the first audience member.
Elder Steve Saucer of Victory Deliverance Ministries replied, "You're redefining and reshaping what we know to be as marriage. And then I believe it's a slippery slope after that."
"Well, either we're equal or we're not. In America everyone is guaranteed to be equal," rebutted Ian James.
"I have three adult children, and one of them happens to be gay, my daughter. And it breaks my heart that they are not all treated the same by the state and federal government," said another audience member, getting to the heart of the debate.
After debating the legality of the issue, the conversation turned to biology.
"Homosexuality is not at all a choice, it is not a lifestyle. It is a natural occurrence," said R.J. McKay of Greater Dayton LGBT.
"I believe that homosexuality is just like any other thing that we decide to partake in, it is a choice," Saucer replied. "The race versus homosexuality thing is a dead point. You've never been considered less than a human because you're gay," he continued... initiating some loud reactions from the audience.
So should Ohio change its laws about same-sex marriage? After a healthy debate, the group couldn't seem to agree.
"We don't need another bible in the statehouse," McKay said angrily.
