TOWN HALL: What Does the Bible Say About Homosexuality
HUBER HEIGHTS -- Minister Jackie Holmes says he uses The Bible as his Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth and that the Bible groups homosexuality as equal with every other sin.
"I look at a homosexual like I look at myself. I'm not a homosexual but I'm guilty of lying and guilty of fornicating. I'm guilty of a lot of things. But only by the blood of Jesus Christ am I forgiven," he said.
We asked him to show the specific scriptures that show how God feels about homosexuality. He started on the first page and worked through the Old Testament and New Testament.
Scriptures referenced: (NIV)
-Genesis 1: 27-28 "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground."
-Leviticus 18: 22 "Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable."
-Deuteronomy 22:5 "A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor a man wear women's clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this."
-Isaiah 3:12 (In reference to laws passed for homosexuals) "My people, your guides lead you astray; they turn you from the path."
-Matthew 7: 21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven."
-Romans 1:18-27 "The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.
24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator who is forever praised. Amen.
26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error."
-1st Corinthians 6:9 "Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God."
Holmes says the Bible is clear in what it teaches but people create the confusion by not studying the scriptures.
"It's not a matter of hating the homosexuals, it's more about shedding light and letting people know the truth," said Holmes. "Don't believe the hype and the lies and the propaganda that's being spread over the airways that this is a proper way of living, because it's not."
Holmes says at the end of the day the scriptures only apply to the gay marriage debate if the individual chooses to be a Christian.
"How did you become a lawyer and not know the law? It's impossible," he said. "How can you be a Christian and not go by the doctrine? I talk to a lot of gay people and a lot of gay people even say they know what they are doing is not right."
