Skin Care Apps Designed to Help ID Problems
DAYTON -- It seems like there's an app for everything these days... and with summertime here, there are a few designed to help you spot trouble on your skin.
"Since they're going to the pools and the beaches, and they've noticed things they've never noticed before. Yeah this is a very busy time of the year for us," said Dr. Matthew Bakos, with the Dermatologists of Southwest Ohio.
But before you even get to Dr. Bakos' office, there are Apps out there, designed to help you spot problems. One App we had him check out is called "Doctor Mole."
It tells our Reporter, Jackie Couture, that her mole seems fine; but when Dr. Bakos looks, he has some real concerns.
"If you look at the borders, you have notches in your borders, and they said your borders are fairly smooth, you know there's some irregularness to it."
It also did not pick up on the color disparity either.
"Medium, dark, light.... you have four shades of brown within one mole," explained Dr. Bakos and told Jackie that to be safe, she should have it removed.
Even though this App didn't help Jackie out, Dr. Bakos says they can be useful.
"There's nothing better than a trained, professional eye but I think it's a great screening tool," said Dr. Bakos.
Another App call Dermoscan - that's still in production - is designed to be used by people who lack access to medical specialists. This technology, which uses a special attached magnifying lens called a Dermoscope, is said to be 85 percent accurate.
"There's a lot of under-served areas, just in the United States even. And so I do think some of these have utility for the primary care field where if they're not sure, they could possibly use this device to possibly help them gauge whether they need to refer it or possibly just tell the patient they're okay," Dr. Bakos explained.
He feels that even if Apps just help get more people in the door to get checked out, we will all be a little healthier. Jackie Couture certainly will.
