Pilot in Critical Condition, Plane Crashed with Empty Gas Tank
COVINGTON, TENNESSEE-- A Greene County, Ohio man is in critical condition after the small plane he was piloting crashed.
The Piper Archer plane flew out of the Wright Bros. Airport on Springboro Pike in Miamisburg at 8am Wednesday, flown by 62 year old Kent Wingate.
Officials who were at the scene say Wingate radioed he could see the airport runway when he started to run out of fuel.
"And then about three minutes later he called back and said he was out of fuel and he was going to have to go down with the plane," said Tipton County Tennessee Sheriff Deputy Chief Donna Turner.
The plane was considered missing in the rural western Tennessee area just before it was scheduled to land; 11 am central time.
Rescue crews were dispatched and two hours later had tracked the plane's emergency beacon two miles north of the Covington airport.
"A portion of the plane was affixed up in the air but the nose of the plane was down actually in water," Turner said, "He was stabilized and then he was flown to the regional medical center in Memphis."
Turner added Wingate had suffered major trauma but as conscious.
Wingate is the department chair of the Aviation Technology and Maintenance Program at Sinclair Community College in Dayton. He has been employed there since 2009.
The school released this statement; "Sinclair officials have been in touch with Kent's family to offer our support and the entire Sinclair community will keep Kent and the Wingate family in our thoughts during this difficult time."
The plane Wingate was flying was registered to the Dayton Pilot's Club.
"There's probably a lot going through someone's mind if that were to happen," said Nick Johnson who refuels planes at the Wright Bros. Airport and has worked with Wingate, "But you try and go back to your training what your flight instructor was saying in your ear during your flight training about running out of fuel or any kind of emergency situation you're just looking for the best possible place to land."
The NTSB and FAA are continuing to investigate.
UPDATE: We now know the name of the pilot injured when his Piper Archer plane crashed in Tennessee Wednesday, he is Kent Wingate. Wingate is also the Chair of the Aviation Technology and Maintenance Department at Sinclair Community College.
The school issued this statement about Wingate:
"Kent Wingate is the chair of the Aviation Technology department," Sinclair spokesman Adam Murka said. "Sinclair officials have been in touch with Kent's family to offer our support and the entire Sinclair community will keep Kent and the Wingate family in our thoughts during this difficult time."
COVINGTON, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities in West Tennessee say a pilot was injured when a single-engine plane crashed near Covington Municipal Airport.
Tipton County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Billy Daugherty said Wednesday the Piper PA28 was found in a heavily wooded area in neighboring Lauderdale County, near the Hatchie River. Daugherty says emergency crews were removing the pilot, who suffered serious injuries, from the woods.
The man, whose name hasn't been released, will be flown to a hospital. Federal officials say the plane departed from Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport in Ohio.
Daugherty says the pilot told air controllers he planned to land at about 11 a.m. at the airport 45 miles northeast of Memphis. The plane never landed, and authorities began a search.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
COVINGTON, Tenn. -- WMC in Memphis, Tenn., is reporting that the plane missing from Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport has been found after crashing in a wooded area, near the Hatchie River in Lauderdale County.
The pilot was transported by ambulance to a hospital, although the pilot's condition is not yet know, according to WMC. There's also no word yet whether anyone else was in the plane.
The Memphis TV station reports that images from a news helicopter show the plane wedged into thick trees.
According to WMC, the pilot was flying to that area to attend a funeral.
Missing Plane From Dayton Airport Found in Tennessee
COVINGTON, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities in West Tennessee say they have found a small plane that advised it was going to land at Covington Municipal Airport but never did.
Tipton County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Billy Daugherty said Wednesday afternoon the plane was found in a rural, heavily wooded area in neighboring Lauderdale County. Daugherty says emergency crews are trying to reach the plane to determine if there are casualties.
It is not immediately known how many people were on the plane.
Daugherty says the pilot told air controllers that it planned to land at about 11 a.m. at the airport about 45 miles northeast of Memphis.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen confirms the flight was missing and that it departed from Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport in Ohio.
Daugherty says crews searched for the missing plane with fixed-wing aircraft and ground crews.
