Dayton Man Says VA Cost Him His Manhood
DAYTON -- Bill Kessler has good reason to be angry. In early 2010, the Vietnam War veteran noticed a lump on his penis.
"And I went to my primary care doctor and he examined me and said I think it's just a cyst. He says 'don't worry about it, if it doesn't go away we'll look at it again'."
So the Marine says several months go by. "Well, then one lump turned into two lumps and showed him again because it started to bleed."
A cystoscopy was finally recommended, a procedure used to see inside your urethra. But Bill says he was told all scopes at the Dayton VA were broken and sent out for repair. Then Bill says the VA tried to outsource the procedure to other medical facilities but kept canceling the appointments. During this time he says a third lump developed.
Finally, according to medical records, nearly a year after Bill first went to the VA a cystoscopy was performed, cancerous lesions were found and Bill was sent to a surgeon in Cincinnati.
He says, "Cincinnati doctors took one look at it and said that's got to go now. So they did a penectomy on me."
In Bill's medical records, the VA admits, "there was a delay in his diagnosis" and they, "offered our apologies to Mr. Kessler for this care episode."
But for Bill, apologies are no consolation for his loss.
"It's very, very frustrating and I get madder than hell. People just don't give a damn about the veterans."
