Abandoned Dog Finds a Forever Home

DAYTON -- A dog named Alexander the Great, cheated death.

Almost two years ago, alexander was found in the basement of a home, abandoned by his family, and left for dead.

But the Humane Society rescued him and gave him a life even they never thought was possible.

He hasn't conquered any cities, or been on deep sea adventures, but this handsome face has conquered some hearts.

"Just chance, it was destiny because I saw him on there, I went and saw him and here we are," said Philip Drescher.

Here Philip Drescher and his wife are adopting alexander and giving him a life he might not have if it wasn't for the Humane Society of Greater Dayton.

"To me they're angels I mean, they take care of these animals," he said, "They bring them back, give them a chance."

Volunteers at the Humane Society brought Alexander back from the brink of death.

"We found Alex in the basement, completely emaciated, not moving, very close to death in fact probably just a day or so away from death," said Brian Weltge, President of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton.

"He was just bones, they say he was living on a mattress, eating a mattress for food and no water," said Drescher.

It took Alexander three days to have the strength to lift his head and a week for him to be able to walk.

"I can't understand how people can do that to an animal, or anything, it's just, you can't have a soul or heart to do that to a dog," said Drescher.

But cases like Alexander's happen more often than most of us know, and it's not just pit bulls that are left behind it's all breeds.

"We believe that animals are a part of your family and that they aren't disposable," said Weltge.

And Alexander now has his forever family and new lease on life.

"I just want to give him a chance, to have a good home to go to," said Drescher.
