City of Kettering to Install Sidewalks, Despite Some Unhappy Neighbors
KETTERING -- A West Kettering neighborhood is finally getting sidewalks, gutters and curbs along David Road and Overland Trail, but some neighbors aren't happy about it.
Despite resident protests, such as displaying signs that read "no sidewalks," the city is moving forward with the project. Some residents are complaining because the homeowners are forced to foot the $53,000 bill.
"We're talking about the people who live on this street, who are gonna be affected, who have to pay for it, who have to maintain it, they're against it," said Thomas Craft, one of several neighbors along West David Road who isn't shy about showing his opposition.
"Even though they (the city) cut the cost of the sidewalk in half, that's not the main thing, the main thing is this is our property, our home. We live here, this is our castle and we like it the way it is," said Craft.
This project has been in the works since 2012.
There are 11 homes affected by that vote, and the people living there will each have to fork over anywhere from $2,500 to $6,500 for the sidewalks, gutters and curbs.
"Definitely gonna hurt them, right next door here we have a widow lady who's putting her son through the University of Dayton. She works full time, she tries to maintain a house, it's gonna cost her dearly, she doesn't know how she's gonna make it," said Craft.
"They have the option to put that on their property tax bill and pay over 10 years," said Mark Schwieterman, City Manager for the City of Kettering.
For some neighbors, the cost is worth the added safety of walking in their neighborhood.
"I'd like to have a sidewalk in the neighborhood so we could take a walk," said Neil Jones. "Right now, the only way we can walk anywhere is by either walking in the street, which around here is pretty dangerous."
Residents were at first on the hook for the whole bill. But city council also voted last night, to pay for half the cost of the sidewalk.
The city is expected to start working on the project in July.
