UPDATE: Humane Agents Have Suspect in Abandoned Puppies Case

DAYTON -- Numerous tips have lead invesigators to a person of interest in the case of five puppies abandoned at the Humane Society.

The box of puppies was left outside the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. They were severely undernourished but survived.

Humane Society officials say these puppies are getting healthier, and while they remain in foster care for now, they will eventually be available for adoption.

The Humane Society says news reports prompted numerous tips, which lead investigators to the suspect, who is described by Humane agents at this time only as an adult male.

The agents say he is cooperating with investigators. Charges are expected to be filed soon.

Investigators say this incident appears unrelated to another case they are investigating from the same night. Two dead pit bull dogs were dumped off at the Humane Society.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported this suspect was being questioned about dumping the dead dogs.

APRIL 22: Starving Puppies Dropped Off at Humane Society

DAYTON -- The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is looking into why five puppies were left on their front door neglected.

Authorities tell us they arrived between 6 and 7 a.m. to the Nicholas location where they found the puppies inside a box.

Humane agents for Montgomery County are asking for help from people who may have been driving along Nicholas Road early Tuesday morning.

They say a passerby may have seen someone dropping the dogs off.

"We're talking between 6:30 and 7:30. There's a lot of traffic, some had to have seen someone," said Humane Agent, Sheila Marquis.

Agents aren't exactly sure yet how old the puppies are but they tell us this a severe case of animal neglect.

They describe the dogs as severely starving.

The puppies are being treated and will be up for adoption when they are better.

"Although they are up and moving around. They have basically been starving to death," said Marquis.

We're also told two pit bulls were found dead at the front door this morning. They were wrapped in blankets and had wounds on their bodies.

Agents could not tell if they were subjected to dog fighting. They are investigating.

"I don't know at this point if the two are connected or whether they are separate," said Marquis.

If you have any information you are asked to call 268-PETS.
