School Officials Working to Dispel Rumor of Threats in Springfield
CLARK COUNTY -- Springfield City School officials are trying to dispel rumors and threats that people might be hearing following the tragic shooting death of a student.
"I've heard somebody's going to come up here and shoot people at the school," said parent Tilly Potter.
"Throughout this past week, rumors have been circulating wildly concerning the tragic events of last weekend," a school news release stated. "In cooperation with the Springfield Police Division, every rumor reported has been run to ground. To date we have found no credible rumors involving the Springfield City School District or any of our school buildings."
Springfield High School student Jeff Wellington, 17, was murdered around 2:30 AM Easter Sunday as he was trying to break up a fight.
"What happened to him was wrong and it's a tragic thing and it shouldn't have happened," said senior Bodey Rozell. "I'm just sorry for the family."
Now the superintendent wants to clear the air
"We said therapy dogs and they are not bomb sniffing dogs," said Dr. David Estrop. "Springfield High is not in chaos and no there have not been any shootings this week or anything close to it but those kind of rumors get fanned. There has not been one credible rumor relative to the safety of students at the school or any other school in Springfield."
"Springfield high school brought in extra security as well as grief counselors this week. They will be there when the high school has their prom Saturday night and will remain through much of next week.
And in case that's not enough,Tecumseh High School sent a poster to Springfield this week with notes from their students who lost three friends from a tragic crash last month. Estrop hopes the recent span of events as well as the unnecessary rumor mill will be a wake up call for parents.
"We don't need more violence," said Estrop. "We need less and that means parents must be in the game. They have to know what their children are doing."
All Springfield school buildings are "open for business as usual" and, in the release, officials referenced nine Alumni of Distinction honorees who were expected to, on Friday morning, speak with students at Springfield High School.
Also, additional counselors, supervisory personnel and security have been and will continue to be in place at both Springfield High School and Keifer Academy.
"If members of the public hear rumors, please try to get as much specific information as possible concerning the rumor, such as who said it, when it was said, how is was said, and what is the source of the rumor," the release states. "Separating fact from fiction will be greatly beneficial."
