UD Students Want Help To "Raise The Roof"
DAYTON -- You probably remember the evening of March 27, when thousands of Flyers fans flooding the streets of the University of Dayton student neighborhood after the men's basketball team beat Stanford in the NCAA tournament to make it to the Elite Eight.
It was a wild celebration that caused a lot of damage to at least one of the student homes. The girls who live in the home can't use their front porch because of a collapsed roof. Now, they're asking for your help to fix it.
The University of Dayton seniors live at 430 Kiefaber Street.
"We were standing there just talking and having a good time, then all of a sudden it felt like the roof went down a ton," said Ellen Corlett.
The girls admit it's their own fault. About 15 people were standing on the roof that night.
"It's true we shouldn't have been up there. We were just wrapped up in the moment. We messed up a lot of people's brackets. It was just exciting," Corlett said.
But the excitement could now cost the roommates as much as $5,000. It's money the college students don't have. So they decided to start a GoFundMe web page, asking donors to help them "Raise the Roof." A sheet with the slogan also hangs now from the damaged porch.
"This was kind of our last resort. We had gone through all our options. We decided to go out on a limb and make the website," said Stephanie Clafford.
"Even a dollar, anything to help because we're all college kids with not a lot of money," said Corlett.
Well, the idea is working. Almost $1,800 has been donated, so far. Much of the money has come from complete strangers.
"We are very surprised. We didn't expect this positive of a response, people and alumni contacting us. It's been really great," said Clafford.
"It's just nice that there's so much support and people are so dedicated to the UD community," agreed Corlett.
