Local Marathon Runners Will Return to Boston
OAKWOOD -- Two women who ran in last year's marathon are lacing up their running shoes again and heading back to Boston, despite having witnessed the bombings at the finish line in 2013.
"Tragically what happened, it took all the enthusiasm away and it became just a very, very sad day," recalled Susan Purks, sitting alongside her running buddy Amy Johnston.
Both runners crossed the Boston Marathon finish line in 2013, Amy for the first time.
"I had finished, but then I was coming back toward the finish line to go back to the family area and that's when I saw both of the explosions, saw and heard both of them," Amy said.
"I just began to run with other runners away ... away from the finish line."
Susan was in a medical tent with another runner not far away.
"We heard the explosion but at that time we didn't know what it was," Susan said.
The pair were part of a group of Miami Valley runners who had gone to Boston to be part of tradition, but the turn of events made life hard when they came home.
"We just would look at each other and think, you know, we were there that day. And it just seemed like a bad dream I think, really," Susan said.
After a year of training and healing, they're ready to lace up their shoes again and show Boston that Dayton cares.
"I think when we make that bend on Boyleston it's going to be so emotional and bittersweet," said Susan. "We're just going to think of all the victims and the poor bystanders who were caught up and so tragically hurt in this whole thing."
"We're just excited to go back and show the people of Boston they're not going to stop this marathon," Amy added.
There are some safety precautions that will be different at this 2014 event.
Susan said runners are being asked not to bring anything with them into the athlete's village.
