Police: Cosplay Facebook Photos are of Mark Edwards
FAIRBORN -- Clark County sheriff's deputies are investigating what they say is Mark Edwards' second Facebook page. Deputies are still waiting to hear back from Facebook personnel to confirm Mark Edwards was the creator of this page where they found hundreds of photos of what appears to be Edwards, Michaela Bruce and a few other people dressed in Halloween costumes while taking violent and provocative pictures.
Police say they believe Mark Edwards created the Facebook page with the alter ego Nagamishe Shiro. It has now been taken down, but one of the albums we saw contained more than 300 photos from an October 2012 photo shoot of the group. It's called Cosplay, or playing in costume.
Vicki Fox, owner of Foy's Costume shop in Fairborn, says she sees people come in all the time to buy similar costumes for similar photo shoots.
"Four or five times a month I will have male and female, and different ages too, come in and they're either going to Comic-Con or they're going to Cosplay," said Fox.
We called around and found out Foy's is where Edwards came in to purchase the costumes for the pictures.
"Edwards, his wife and I thought both of them were his children but the other one was the 14-year-old girl," said Fox.
She says Michaela Bruce came in the store with them already in costume, and Edwards picked out everyone else's costume.
"It's like he had total control of the whole thing," she said.
He also had control in the photo shoot. In some pics he is seen as a domineering figure over Michaela. But Fox says this is actually normal in cosplay.
"I don't see that there's any fear in her face at all," she said. "I don't think where he's got his hand on her throat is a threatening move to her."
She says photo shoots are something cosplayers due to advertise their skills, but UD professor Art Jipson says as big as the phenomenon is, this may not have been appropriate.
"Clearly here you have an individual who was not thinking about his obligations to his family," said Jipson. "He is thinking about cosplay and the fantasy life that he has built up of him as the character and him hanging out with other people who fit into the world view."
Fox said Edwards even gave her a card to invite her to some of their cosplay events and she was shocked to hear when police arrested him.
"I was sitting at home when I saw it and I let out an 'Oh my God.' He's been into our store and I had talked one-on-one with him," said Fox.
No word yet on the other people in the photos. Police say they are using these pics in their investigation.
We also spoke with Michaela's mom Tammy and she says these pics obviously gave her more concern about the nature of their relationship.
