Dayton To Study Road Where Man Was Struck, Killed
DAYTON -- We went searching for answers after several complaints over the lack of crosswalks and sidewalks in the area where a Dayton man was killed Saturday night.
"No crosswalks or nothing, motorcycles flying all the time, things like that," said Glenn Hughes. He says navigating Gettysburg Avenue in Dayton is no easy task.
"Get off here from the buses to get to the homeless shelter, you know, a lot of people travel through here in a day," he said.
Saturday night, police say Christopher Frock was leaving the homeless shelter and on his way to the bus stop when he was struck by two cars on Gettysburg. People jaywalk often, and crosswalks are scarce in this area.
We caught up with Dexter Harris as he was catching the bus. He said he is concerned for his safety, especially at night, and wants some changes.
"Some stop signs, some pedestrian crosswalks and some lighting," Harris said.
We asked the city what they plan to do about this busy area.
"Before this accident, there were no issues brought to my attention that there were some concerns there," said Fred Stovall, who runs Dayton Public Works.
They'll now conduct a traffic study in this area.
"What is the traffic count as far as vehicular traffic on Gettysburg, from the bus stop that goes to the homeless shelter there," explained Stovall.
Dayton Police are also still investigating Christopher Frock's death. If they find a crosswalk, lighting or other safety features would help the area they will pass those recommendations on to Stovall's department.
With just a conversation of perhaps making this area safer to navigate, Glenn Hughes is relieved.
"That would be nice, you know, safe for the kids, safe for everybody," Hughes said.
