Clark County Judge Increased Bond For Mark Edwards
SPRINGFIELD -- The Clark County man who led police on a three day manhunt was back before a judge Friday. Clark County Common Pleas Judge Douglas Rastatter increased Edward's bond from $50,000 to $500,000.
Mark Edwards' had a $50,000 bond for several counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and interference with custody after he and Michaela Bruce went missing in September. He bonded out and last week led police on a three day manhunt, again with the 14 year old girl.
The prosecution called a couple different deputies to the stand today to argue Edwards needed to stay locked up until his trial begins.
"There is strong evidence that suggests he remained in the Springfield area the entire time these events describe," said defense attorney Matt Jewson.
Since there is no evidence that Edwards tried to flee Clark County his defense argued there is no reason to have an incredibly high bond. Meanwhile the prosecution wanted to have Edwards bond completely revoked so that he had no chance of getting out of jail.
"Mark Edwards cannot be placed on bond," said Clark County Assistant Prosecutor Brian Driscoll. "This court has given him that opportunity and he completely violated that opportunity and disregarded every part of this court order."
Michaela's mom Tammy Bruce was also in the court room and saw Edwards for the first time since he ran away with her daughter.
"It was hard. It was very hard," Bruce said. "I was pleased that the bond was raised and confirms he is going to stay in jail. My daughter is doing well. I'm just thankful she is safe."
Prosecutors have also filed criminal charges for when Edwards went missing last week. His bond is set at $375,000 for those charges which include fleeing and eluding, violation of a protection order and interference with custody. Those charges are set for grand jury proceedings Monday.
We also spoke with Edwards' wife in court Friday. She says she is standing by her man. She says she's not upset with the increased bond because they weren't going to be able to post bail either way.
