Reds Fans Celebrate Opening Day
CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Reds' first Opening Day was May 2, 1882. In the last 133 years, only five have landed in March and fans at Great American Ball Park say the earlier the better.
America's oldest professional baseball team started Opening Day with one of the oldest traditions to celebrate, a parade.
The 93rd Findley Market Parade took a slightly different course this year due to the construction of the Cincinnati Streetcar Project. Lisa Porter and her husband, Michael, drove down from Trotwood to get a front row seat along Fountain Square for the parade.
"We've always loved the Reds and it's hard to get Reds tickets but we got Reds tickets actually to see the ball game this year, so really excited," says Michael Porter.
"I think they understand now that with the rotation it's important to get that pitching together so we can take it all the way this time, so that's really important," says Lisa Porter.
For the third year in a row, Joe Nuxhall Way and Freedom Way was blocked off to create a giant block party in front of Great American Ball Park with live music, beer and food.
The Imparato family made the trip to Cincinnati from Kettering and even excused their kids from school for the day to make some new memories together.
"I've never been to Opening Day. It's been pretty fun so far. I've gone to the parade and we're going to try to get some autographs and I think it's going to be pretty fun," says 11-year-old Cyrus Imparato. "I'm just hoping that we can beat the Cards, because I don't like them."
The Reds lost that first Opening Day in 1882, by a score of 9-10 to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. Overall, the teams is under .500 on Opening Day, but win or lose, fans are just happy baseball is back in the Queen City.
