New Study Claims to Predict Alzheimer's
MIAMI VALLEY -- Would you want to know if you will get Alzheimer's disease? If so, a new study claims it can detect the disease.
The Miami Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association estimates that 30,000 people in the Miami Valley have the disease, but that number will triple by the year 2050 as baby boomers enter the greatest factor -- age.
"As soon as you get that diagnosis you're grieving," said Judy Allbery, a volunteer for the association. She lost her mother Ruth to Alzheimer's in May 2011. "It's one of the hardest things for anyone to do to have to go through if you're a caregiver you know what's happening."
Ruth was in her late 70s when she was diagnosed in 2002, but Judy wishes she'd been around to see this new test.
"She probably would have had it. That's the type of person she was," she said.
"Currently, if you think you have symptoms now you go to your doctor and they have to rule it out so they have to give you every test they can think of," said Eric VanVlymen, executive director of the Miami Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.
The new test is much simpler. Researchers tested hundreds of healthy people over the age 70 looking for 10 specific lipids. Five years later, they tested lipid levels in the people who got Alzheimer's and found the group's lipid levels were lower compared to healthy seniors.
The results were 90% accurate at identifying the disease.
"It shows the movement, progress, of this cause that we're looking at things that might actually prevent it," said VanVlymen.
The test is still preliminary and there is currently no treatment for the disease.
"Imagine if a blood test existed where you could go to your doctor, get that, and then get a treatment," VanVlymen added.
After seeing what it did to her mom, Judy says until there's a cure for the disease, she'd want to stay in the dark about her genetics.
"I mean yes I am healthy what if I did have the test and they see I'll have it in a couple years. Then what?"
