IRS Phone Scam is Largest Ever
DAYTON -- Right now the IRS and the local Better Business Bureau is monitoring the biggest phone scam in history. Scam artists are pretending to be IRS agents and demanding money over the phone.
This scam is so intricate con-artists are spoofing the phone numbers. So on your caller id it actually looks like a call from the IRS.
"I would get on it right away because you don't want to mess around with that," Dayton's Lizzie Holecek respond to seeing 'IRS' on her caller id.
That's the attitude most scam artists are hoping you have. Tax season is a playground for predators.
"We've always seen calls but it seems there are more victims in this situation. We know they are stepping up their efforts and using the technology available to them," John North, Dayton BBB explained Friday.
Scammers will aggressively claim you owe money to the IRS and threaten you with consequences if you don't pay up.
"Often times they tell you they will send the police over to your house and then they'll follow up with another spoofed call from the police department," North added.
North says the IRS will never send the police to your house to arrest you. But thousands across the US have already taken the bait. and forked over more than a $1 million.
"I would probably just hang up or say thank you but I'm doing it separately or something," UD Senior Nina lokar commented.
North says the IRS will always send you a letter first before they contact you by email or telephone.
" You hang up and you call a number you know to be the IRS. Check for the IRS' number and you call that direct number," North continued. "The IRS is never going to ask you to pay your taxes by wire transfer or by a pre-paid debit card."
20,000 vulnerable tax payers have already fallen victim, but by knowing how the IRS works you can stop the cycle.
