Is the "Polar Bear" Attack a Real Thing?
DAYTON -- The RTA bus driver who was attacked during his shift is still recovering.
It happened early Monday morning.
Police say three men approached the driver after he got out of the bus, they stabbed him and shot at him twice.
The bullets lodged into a motivational book he kept in his pocket, ultimately saving his life.
We're learning more about what the men said moments before the attack.
According to the police report, the men said, "if you want to be all the way in the club, you have to kill the polar bear."
We did some digging and found that there is a game called "polar bear hunting" and it's eerily similar to what's now known as the knockout game.
Dozens of videos of the so-called "knockout game" have surfaced over the years on youtube.
But it's now also known by several other names, such as black bear hunting, brown bear hunting and polar bear hunting.
"You're choosing a victim you think meet a certain requirement," said Art Jipson, "So it might be that they're light skinned. In some cases we're seeing people chosen because of the perception of their race or their skin tone or skin color."
Moments before the RTA bus driver was attacked Monday morning, the three men were overheard talking about killing the "polar bear."
"Color seems to be tied to it and perceptions of skin tone are definitely tied to that, now whether that's active racism, we'd have to talk to the offenders themselves," said Jipson.
"I think it's a big mistake when you hear polar bear hunting to make an assumption," said Marlon Shackelford, Omega Street Advocates.
Shackelford works with teens and young men on the streets of Dayton.
"The mistake always, is if we see something that we think is racially motivated or gang incited, we need to make sure that we have facts, we need to make sure that we have data," said Shackelford.
Shackelford fears jumping to conclusions about these violent games is dangerous.
"It scares the community," he said, "One of the things you don't want to do is scare a community. Now you got people thinking now wait a minute, It's us against them, and we don't need that here in Dayton, Ohio."
So far, no arrests have been made in this attack.
Dayton Police have not said if they believe the attack was racially charged.
