Dayton Woman Kidnapped, Carjacked in Broad Daylight
MORAINE -- Police are looking for three suspects after a Dayton woman was carjacked and kidnapped in broad daylight. The carjacking happened at the Marathon Gas Station on Dryden Road on Wednesday afternoon.
Police report the victim was shaken up after the incident, and reported one of her attackers tried to strangle her.
Investigators say the carjacking wasn't the first car theft of the night, that the same men had stolen a rental car in Miamisburg and crashed it on Interstate 75.
Moraine Police say they were dispatched to follow two of the four men who ran from the crash after reports from witnesses.
"They approached the victim who was sitting in the parking lot and indicated they had a handgun," said Police Sergeant Jon Spencer.
One of the suspects told the victim to open the door and drive so she wouldn't get hurt.
"A witness followed them into Dayton and called out dispatch about what was going on," Spencer said. Officers responded to the car's new location in Dayton where the suspects jumped out and kept running near Broadway and Edwin C. Moses.
Thomas Crawford was caught and arrested at the scene. He has been charged with aggravated robbery, kidnapping and receiving stolen property. He was also cited for the highway crash.
Police are still looking for three other suspects. The first man is believed to be the driver of the crashed car. He is described as a black male adult, medium height and build, possibly in his mid 30's or early 40's. He's believed to have complained of a leg injury. He had a pierced ear, medium length hair and a goatee. He may be wearing a patchwork leather coat with purple patches on it.
The second suspect at large is also a black male adult in his early to mid 20's with a thin build. Police report he wore a gray hooded sweatshirt or jacket, had his hair shaved close to his head and had a large tattoo on his neck.
The third suspect at large is a black male also in his early to mid 20's, he wore a dark blue hooded sweatshirt or jacket.
"It's a rare kind of circumstance," Sergeant Spencer said.
Moraine resident Jessie King gets his gas from the station where the carjacking happened and says he was surprised to hear it happened in broad daylight.
"Not down here, not at this gas station," he said.
Moraine Police say the witnesses who followed after the carjacking were a big help in catching Crawford, and that the victim did the right thing by complying with the suspects.
"If you feel your life is in danger, obviously comply with whatever you're being told," Spencer says, "try to get out as quickly as possibly and as safely as possible."
Any information on the outstanding suspects should be forwarded to Moraine Police.
