Winter Weather & Your Skin
MIAMISBURG -- Moisturizer is a popular item at the store this winter. More people need to lotion up to counter the unusually long stretch of frigid temperatures in the Miami Valley.
The Urban Loft Salon and Day Spa says it's getting more women and men walking in for hydrating hair and skin treatments.
Esthetician Kimberly Singer says lotioning twice a day is the easiest step to take at home.
"Redness, dryness, just flakiness, things like that. So it's really important to put moisturizer on, or even sunscreen, I know that even though it's cloudy out the sun can still peak through the clouds," says Singer.
And it's not just your skin you need to protect. Stylist Marci Whisner says more of her clients come in with dry, flaky and breaking hair in the winter. "You use a hair dryer a lot more in the winter than in the summer, straightening and your ends, they can't take it. You have to do things to infuse your hair with keratin, oil and that kind of thing to help set the hair in place," says Whisner.
Amy Thornhill stopped at Urban Loft to treat her feet, which were dry from this winter season. "It's so cold and I just needed a pamper," says Thornhill.
Urban Loft says there are several things people can do at home to keep moisture in, using lukewarm water in the shower instead of hot, taking an oatmeal bath and making your own exfoliating scrub out of baking powder.
