UPDATE: Target Closing Trotwood, Middletown Stores; 70 Million Affected by Data Breach
TROTWOOD -- Target announced it's closing its Middletown and Trotwood locations on May 3. The departure is yet another economic hit to Trotwood.
A trip down the Consumer Square Shopping Plaza in Trotwood feels like traveling through a ghost town.
Cub Foods, Kmart and Walmart have shut their doors and Sears will follow suit this month. Target is the latest retailer to announce its departure.
"It's a shame. Of the stores that are for shopping we don't have them, we got a bunch of junk stores," Ronald Leath of Trotwood said.
Trotwood City Manager Michael Lucking says profit is the bottom line.
"Not at all surprised but disappointed," Lucking said Friday. "We know as a store their sales underperformed their sister sales in the region."
Target saw sales fall nationally in the fourth quarter of last year by 2 percent to 6 percent.
Still, the loss is a blow to folks in Trotwood.
"Kind of sad, it really is. Driving back in the day and now it seems everything on our side of town it's just going away," Trotwood's Dana Moschetti added.
City officials say they were helpless in saving the store and the community is blameless as well.
"This is not their fault. This is a decision made by a corporation away from Trotwood," Lucking added.
A move that adds yet another vacant building to the once thriving commerce center.
"We will work closely with Target to figure out the credible business for the community," Lucking shared.
City officials are looking to replace Target with another retail store, or re-purposing the building for another type of use like a manufacturing operation.
TROTWOOD -- Citing financial performance, Target announced Friday that it is closing eight U.S. stores, including one in Trotwood and another in Middletown.
The closing is planned for May 3.
The other stores to be closed are in West Dundee, Ill.; Las Vegas, Nev.; North Las Vegas, Nev.; Duluth, GA; Memphis, Tenn. and Orange Park, Fla.
Employees of those stores will be offered opportunities to transfer to similar positions at other Target stores.
In other news Friday, Target says that personal information including phone numbers and email and mailing addresses was stolen from as many as 70 million customers in its pre-Christmas data breach. That was substantially more customers than Target had previously said were affected.
The chain also indicated its sales have been hurt by the breach, cutting its forecast for fourth-quarter earnings and a key sales barometer.
Target Corp. announced in December that about 40 million credit and debit cards may have been affected by a data breach that happened between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15 just as the holiday shopping season was getting into gear.
