Senator Brown Says He Wants EpiPens in Every School

DAYTON -- Right now, Ohio law only allows schools to keep an EpiPen -- which injects epinephrine -- for students with a prescription.

"It's been a few years that we've been fighting for this legislation," said Mary Barnett of the Ohio Association of School Nurses.

The Ohio House passed a bill allowing schools to keep extra EpiPens on hand, but Sen. Sherrod Brown says the bill doesn't go far enough. He wants the law to mandate having extras in stock.

"Whether it's the chemicals we deal with every day, or the air we breathe, or the water we drink, something has made children more vulnerable to these than they were a generation or two generations ago," Brown said.

"We haven't served any peanut butter or shellfish products in five years, so that does help but we don't want to rely on that being the only thing," said Virginia Noe, Director of Health Services at Dayton Public Schools.

Right now about half of the states in the U.S. allow schools to keep extra EpiPens for children with food allergies. There are a couple reasons states like Ohio haven't allowed it.

"About 3 percent of the kids in Dayton Public Schools have known food allergies," said Noe.

Also some schools don't have a school nurse.

"Teachers are trained, secretaries are trained, principals are trained, we do a very extensive job getting training for the non-medical staff," said Noe.

"As a parent I would be comfortable with any educator administering it to my child," said Dominic Thacker-Mann, who keeps an EpiPen on hand for his daughter who suffers from food allergies. "I would've been very concerned if her allergies had been undiagnosed and she'd been in an environment where an EpiPen was not available."

"It's very exciting for us. It allows us to treat a child who has a severe allergic reaction to food, bees, anything like that," said Barnett. "It allows us to treat them immediately with EpiPens and not run the risk of them dying in front of us

The $100 cost is also a big deterrent for the EpiPens, but under the proposed legislation, newly allotted federal funds would pay the bill.
