Firefighters Say Smoke Detectors Save Lives

MORAINE -- Smoke detectors are the key to alerting you and your family when there's danger inside your home.

"If you don't have some kind of warning to wake you up before there's enough smoke you can potentially become unconscious and then you're not going to get out of the house," Lt. Gary Rettig.

Lt. Rettig has been working for the Moraine Fire Department for nearly 30 years, and says smoke detectors are a necessity in every home.

"They have the potential to save a life," said Lt. Rettig. "If people get that early warning and react properly and they exit their home and get everybody out in a timely manner it can prevent these tragic events that happen."

You can find smoke detectors just about everywhere.

At Target they range in price from just under $8 to about $34.

It's just a matter of what features you want, but firefighters say no matter what, just get one.

"It's s life or death decision," said Lt. Rettig.

And you'll also want to create a family fire safety plan.

It helps you and your family know how to get out of your home quickly and safely in case of a fire.

"It's critical because so you know everybody is outside and accounted for," Lt. Rettig.

Simple things you can do to make sure your family doesn't have to see these uniforms.

Firefighters recommend a several smoke alarms in your home.

One in a main area, and others in each bedroom.

Also, if you need a smoke alarm and can't afford one you can possibly get one for free.

Just call your local fire department to find out how.
