Reminder: Check your Smoke Detectors Once a Month
DAYTON -- There have been three fatal fires in eight days at homes that had no working smoke detectors. We're focusing on this need, and so is Angie's Firehouse Tavern.
The owner put up this sign "No smoke detectors is akin to playing Russian Roulette. C'mon man'' outside his restaurant on Thursday.
The owner Pat - who is a retired Dayton Firefighter - said he put up the sign to make a statement..
Having smoke detectors in your home won't help you if they're not in working order. We hit the streets and everyone we talked to said they had at least 2 detectors in their home. But the most of them did not test them regularly.
"Not too often, but after that fire i checked them right away," Katherine Puterbaugh, Dayton, said referring to the Kettering fire that claimed four lives.
" Ummm probably last February. I'd have to test them," Kyle Massing of Kettering responded Thursday.
"About every three to four months. If I'm walking by it I'll just hit it and see," Kettering's Jane Drazd responded.
Jane is on the right track but firefighters suggest you do it at least once a month. Having a working detector is like having a 24 hour guard.
Experts suggest you change the batteries twice a year at daylight savings time. Anytime you change your clocks, change the batteries in your smoke detectors too.
