Stand Your Ground Future Uncertain
DAYTON -- A battle of where we should be able to protect ourselves rages on at the state capitol.
On Wednesday, state lawmakers met for a third committee hearing on House Bill 203, commonly titled stand your ground law.
Those who oppose the bill stood their ground in Columbus, "the fact that this bill continues to move forward in the legislative process is alarming," said State Rep. Alicia Reece.
The bill's sponsor defended the bill before lawmakers, "we have a legitimate second amendment right that protects our ability to keep and bear arms," said State Representative Terry Johnson, (R).
While the debate heated up in Columbus, local leaders came together for a morning press conference to say 'no' to stand your ground.
Richard Dixon, with the Miami Valley Action Committee says we already have laws to protect yourself in the state and we don't need more, "we don't need all those guns on the street people can shoot another person and claim it's self defense," he said.
Those who support the bill though say it would make our streets safer, "now, the hysteria is gun owners will use this law to walk across the street and shoot somebody they don't like. Well, that's not going to meet the self defense test in Ohio," said Larry Moore, with Buckeye Firearms Association.
Wednesdays committee hearing ended with no vote, leaving an uncertain future for the bill.
