DNA Test Determines Risk for Breast Cancer
HUBER HEIGHTS -- There is a new and easy way to help screen for breast cancer.
On Tuesday, Contemporary Obstetrics and Gynecology in Huber Heights talked with us about an oral test they offer called BREVAGen.
It's a test to help women accurately understand their risk of developing breast cancer.
The test is fast and easy and only takes 20 seconds to swab one of your cheeks for DNA.
The test doesn't detect the cancer, but can provide information on how to screen you in the future.
"It helps us cast a net a little bit wider and broaden the scope of people who need closer surveillance as well as preventive measures for breast cancer issues," said Dr. Caroline Peterson.
After doctors swab the inside of both cheeks, they send it to a lab. The test results come back within three to four weeks.
We sat down with a Tipp City woman who battled breast cancer at the age of 32.
Diana Featherstone is now a seven-year survivor of the leading cancer in the Dayton area.
"The only way you're really going to find something is through screening," she said.
Featherstone was diagnosed shortly after moving to Tipp City and with two young kids in her home.
"I think immediately you think, 'I'm going to die.'"
Featherstone found the lump herself and then began treatments a month later for cancer.
Now, she helps women who were in her shoes with the non-profit organization, Pink Ribbon Girls.
"We provide childcare, housekeeping, transportation and meals for women going through breast cancer treatment," said Featherstone. "We're paying the kindness forward. It's no charge. There's no income requirement."

As for the BREVAGen oral test, it is done for women who don't have a family history of breast cancer.
Experts also say it's important for women 50 and older because that's when 80 percent of women are diagnosed.
This test does not replace your yearly mammogram.
HUBER HEIGHTS -- A simple test can check to see if you're at risk for breast cancer.
It only takes a simple swab of the cheek to get your DNA.
That's how doctors determine if you have a higher than normal risk to develop breast cancer.
If results show you do, it will alert doctors to start screening you more aggressively.
"It helps us cast a net a little bit wider and broaden the scope of people who need closer surveillance as well as preventive measures for breast cancer issue," said Caroline Peterson of Contemporary Obstetrics & Gynecology of Dayton.
Coming up tonight on ABC 22/FOX 45, we explore who is the best candidate for this test and when it should be done.
