Dayton Honor Flight In Jeopardy
DAYTON -- An Honor Flight, taking local veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials, maybe in jeopardy, because of the government shutdown.
"It was just a great trip overall. I was so wound up, I had so much fun." Korean War veteran Bill Adkins from Troy, went on the once-in-a-lifetime trip last month.
He was aboard an Honor Flight that took him to Washington, D.C., to see the national war memorials. He said the recognition and support for the vets was overwhelming and wonderful.
"This country has great patriotism. It's really something to be there." Adkins said.
Even though the memorials are technically closed due to the government shutdown, a group of veterans went through the barriers Tuesday to tour the World War II Memorial site.
Visiting other memorials, including the Vietnam Wall Memorial and the Korean War Memorial, are still in jeopardy.
The Dayton Honor Flight is planning an Oct. 12 trip, even though the government could still be shut down.
"It is a concern because there is so much planning that goes into these trips," Dayton Honor Flight Board Member Larry Blackmore said.
Blackmore said most of the veterans are in their 80s and 90s and look forward to this trip.
For a lot of them, this trip is their one chance to see their memorial," Blackmore said.
Adkins said he would hate to see any veteran not being able to experience the Honor Flight trip.
"They deserve it. This is our country. This is what they fought for, that is why we are here today, it's why we are free," Blackmore said.
Blackmore said he remains optimistic that the government shutdown won't last long, and everything will return to normal.
"So we are thinking positive they will continue to do the right thing and let the groups in," he said.
Thirty-five veterans from the Dayton area are headed to DC on the Honor Flight trip next weekend.
As of Wednesday night, they were still planning to go.
