State Patrol Makes Big Pot Bust
UPDATE: PREBLE COUNTY--157 pounds of marijuana was seized by state troopers, Thursday night on I-70 in Preble County.
The weed, worth more than 700 thousand dollars was stashed in the trunk of a Toyota Camry.
Ignacio Leyva, 36, from Chicago was pulled over because troopers said he was following too close to the car in front of him.
A drug sniffing K9 alerted the trooper to the drugs in the trunk, and Leyva was arrested. He told troopers he was headed to Springfield.
"That's 157 pounds of marijuana that won't make it into a city, a village, or a township in the state of Ohio, and that is a lot of marijuana." Lt. Jon Payer from the Ohio State Patrol said.
This is the second traffic stop that lead state troopers to major seizures in just 24 hours.
Wednesday night troopers found 190 ecstasy pills, cash, weed and loaded hand gun when they pulled over Roger Clayton on I 70 for not having working tail lights.
"It's been a busy 24 hours for us in the Dayton metro area." Payer added.
So far this year there have been 7,652 drug arrests on Ohio's highways. That is more than 15 hundred arrests from 2012.
The amount of drugs on our interstates is alarming to some drivers.
"Yes, I'm very concerned because we travel a lot." Adele Jackson said.
Lt. Payer said state troopers are cracking down on traffic violations and going the extra mile to get drugs off the streets.
"Its just another way our guys are out there contributing and making Ohio a safer place to be."
CLAYTON -- More than 150 pounds of marijuana are off the streets after an overnight bust.
Troopers stopped an out-of-town driver on I-70 and made the discovery.
It happened just before midnight on Thursday. Troopers say they found 157 pounds of marijuana when it was pulled from the car, which has a street value of $712,789.
They say a man from Chicago was driving along I-70 in Preble County heading to Springfield.
He was pulled over for following another car too close. Troopers were suspicious and had a K-9 search the car.
The dog hit on the marijuana and now all of that marijuana will not make it to its destination.
Lt. Payer says I-70 is a main route for people transporting drugs and troopers are always on the lookout.
CLAYTON -- The Dayton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol made a big marijuana bust overnight on Interstate 70. Troopers uncovered 157 pounds of the drug, which is a street value of $700,000.
Troopers have just wrapped up a press conference on the overnight bust. We'll have more information this morning on ABC 22 Good Morning and Fox 45 in the Morning.
