Health Insurance Under Obamacare
DAYTON -- Most media coverage of the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, has focused on problems with its website and how few people have been able to sign up. President Obama says those problems will be fixed and that people can also enroll by phone or in person.
What's received much less coverage is how many Americans -- including people here in the Miami Valley -- are being forced onto the new government health exchanges because their employers have dropped health insurance and are instead willing to pay a fine.
The employer mandate for businesses with 50 or more full-time employees has been postponed by President Obama until 2015. But the president refused Republican demands to postpone the individual mandate as well (a demand that triggered the partial government shutdown) so anyone who loses employer coverage will have to buy a policy on the exchanges or pay a fine.
Our story focuses on Poelking Lanes. The family-owned business founded in 1939 has about 150 employees at four locations, and all of them recently received notice that Poelking is dropping its coverage. Joe Poelking tells us how painful that decision was, given the number of long-term workers he has. But Joe Poelking says he cannot afford health insurance under Obamacare.
And now, those employees may get a shock, because individual premiums in Ohio are expected to rise 41%. For more on that see the CNN story at http://money.cnn.com/2013/08/06/news/economy/obamacare-premiums/
