Improvements Made For Pedestrians Near the Dayton Mall, But Some Say It's Not Working
MIAMI TOWNSHIP -- It's a story you only saw on our station.
Pedestrians near the Dayton Mall, playing a dangerous game while crossing Springboro Pike.
Miami Township Police are now citing people who are crossing the street and are not in a crosswalk.
After our first story aired more than a month ago, signs warning pedestrians went up on all four side of the intersection.
But Thursday, we stood on the corner for more than an hour, and caught three people crossing five lanes of moving traffic.
"People are just used to crossing this part of the intersection so I don't think it's going to stop them," said Mohamed Redha, Owner of Gyro Palace.
There's proof that it's not working.
More than a month ago, we caught three people crossing Springboro Pike after ODOT put out these no pedestrian crossing signs.
"I wish they would kind of put some signs saying hey the crosswalk is over that way instead of just keeping no crossing here it's kind of hard to break a habit," said Redha.
A habit months after ODOT removed the red light at this intersection to help with traffic flow.
But now people don't have a safe way to cross the street, and are forced to walk two-tenths of a mile to the new crosswalk and RTA bus stop.
"We just thought that that would be a safer place for people crossing to get into the mall, and for the bus stop to be there," said Mandi Dillon, ODOT, District 7 Public Information Officer.
Besides the signs warning pedestrian of the danger, and police citing jaywalkers, the Dayton Mall closed off the stairs leading from the road to their parking lot.
But local business owners say it's not working.
"When people get off work you see a lot more people crossing where they're not supposed to," said Redha.
But ODOT says they've done all they can, now it's up to you.
"Really at this point all we can do is just hope that people follow the signals and follow the signs so that they will actually move to that southern most intersection and use that for the crosswalk," said Dillon.
If you have any crosswalk problems in your neighborhood, you can email the reporter at email@example.com.
