Clark County Woman Accused of Stealing from School
UPDATE - SPRINGFIELD -- A Springfield school employee is accused of stealing 3-thousand-dollars.
Deputies say, Leatrece Trehune, was the school's treasurer, and is accused of taking money from their account.
Deputies tell me the school noticed something was wrong last month, and called for help immediately.
Once deputies interviewed Trehune, they say she admitted to everything.
"There really is no words for it, it's just shocking," said Kali Waters, Springfield resident.
Shocking even to Clark County Sheriffs deputies.
"Anybody who's in a position of public trust, when they misappropriate funds or misuse funds it's very discouraging," Lt. Christopher Clark, Clark County Sheriff's Office.
Terhune is accused of stealing from the Clark County Educational Service Center.
Surveillance pictures show Terhune buying thirty 100-dollar Wal Mart gift cards.
Deputies then say she used at least 11 of them to buy things for herself.
"How can you take away the right for kids to learn for the ability to have a better education and use it for your personal gain?" said Waters.
We wanted to know the same thing.
So we went to the address listed on the police report to find Terhune.
Turns out, the man living there says he knows her, but she doesn't stay there.
And no answer is disappointing to Waters.
"We're supposed to be molding the minds of little kids they don't know very much at all," said Waters.
And it's because of that, that Waters believes Trehune should have to serve more than jail time.
"She should have to do something to give back to the kids," said Waters, "To show kids that even if you do something wrong like that, to be strong enough and man enough to turn around and apologize and do something. It helps you save face a little bit and that's the right thing to do."
Trehune faced a judge Friday morning.
She now faces up to 18 months in jail and a $5,000 fine. We reached out to the school, who did not want to comment.
Deputies recovered 19 of the 30 gift cards, and returned them to the school.
CLARK COUNTY - A woman trusted to take care of money for a Springfield school is instead accused of stealing it. Deputies arrested Leatrece Terhune, after they say she stole more than a thousand dollars.
Clark County officials say Turhune admitted to the crime during questioning and seemed remorseful for what she had done.
Terhune was caught on surveillance camera buying thirty $100 gift cards from the Wal-Mart on Tuttle Road in Springfield. Terhune was the treasurer for Clark County Educational Service Center, and took the money for the gift cards from the school's account. Deputies say she used them for her own personal gain, in fact even spent one at a Wal Mart in Georgia. Terhune apparently spent 11 of the 30 gift cards, taking $1,100 from the school and it's students.
Lt. Christopher Clark
"In this situation it's the kids that are participating in that particular project or that particular group that they have there are the ones that suffer,'' Lt. Christopher Clark, of the Clark County Sheriff's Office told us, ''because the money that was supposed to go to help them out, went elsewhere."
Terhune appeared in court Friday morning, but is not in jail at this time. If found guilty, she faces up to 18 months in jail and a $5,000 fine.
We tried to contact the school, and were told they had no comment.
