$600 Electric Bill? Read This Before Signing With Third Party
JAMESTOWN -- Cathy Wolf and Gery Deer both look after their 80-year-old father's electric bill.
"I don't understand why he has to pay a deposit when he's been with them for 50 years," said Wolf.
They contacted ABC22/FOX45 after they saw the $600 bill, a big deposit to get back with Dayton Power & Light after using a third-party company.
"They never shut his power off or anything like that," said Deer.
No, but they did have a few late payments and that third-party company, DPL Energy, dropped them. They switched to DPL Energy a couple years ago.
"There is no paperwork required, you don't have to fill out a form," said Deer.
"It's a sister company to DP&L, which tells you they can save you money on your monthly bill. That's because these third-party companies are not regulated by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, or PUCO, and can charge you whatever they want.
We called Dayton Power & Light to find out the reason behind this bill.
As it turns out, if you leave the third-party company, or are not welcomed back, PUCO requires you pay your average bill multiplied by 130 percent before you can get back with DP&L. But Deer and Wolf say they never knew they were leaving DP&L.
"They are branding it as if it's a part of Dayton Power & Light. It's confusing, it's misleading and DPL energy and Dayton Power & Light sound a lot like each other to somebody who doesn't understand how these partnerships work," said Deer.
After the phone call, DP&L recalculated what they owe down to about $450, but they still want you to learn from their mistakes before the next time you decide to make any changes to your provider
"Don't sign up with people unless you get a complete understanding of how it works. Call Dayton Power & Light and ask what happens if I go to this company, cause that's the part that no one tells you," said Deer.
We reached out to DP&L for comment but they did not return our phone calls.
