DOD Seeking Creative Minds To Help Spread Anti-Tobacco Message
FAIRBORN -- It's bad for you and costs all of us a lot of money in the long run. More and more, we're seeing companies refusing to hire smokers, and our government's now taking a stand.
Senior Airman Richard Ware is down to seven cigarettes a day.
"I quit once and it was a little difficult. But with the right motivation and mindset I think it's a possible thing," said the 21 year old who is trying again to quit, after smoking for five years.
"When you smoke, it makes it a lot harder. It makes running harder, it makes everything else harder, it adds a financial burden. So when you put everything together, it's just so much better for us to quit."
For these very reasons, many employers, including the Department of Defense, want smoke-free employees. They've launched a video competition, calling on people to get creative.
"We challenge you to fight the enemy, DOD is looking for the best anti-tobacco video out there," says a Marine dressed up as a cigarette in the promotion for this campaign.
The winners will be featured on the site called "Fight the Enemy." It's to promote a tobacco-free military. Ware is a broadcast journalist for Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, so he already has some great ideas.
"I feel like if I can take the step and take the initiative, and if I am motivated anyone else to do the same, then it's a win-win for everyone," Ware explains.
At a Wright-Patt Health fair, a table was dedicated to helping people quit. Their smoking cessation program's been successful. At the six-month mark, 40 percent of the participants successfully crushed the habit.
"Usually most folks that come to the class, they're already ready because we've already done some screening with them. So they're ready to actually make this commitment and then we work on behavior change because everything with tobacco is behavior change," said Michael Papio, the Health Promotion manager at Wright-Patt. He adds that whether it is quitting cold turkey or using medication, the key is tailoring each program to each individual's needs.
Sr. Airman Ware is taking note.
"Mine's just mind over matter. Eventually, I'm weaning myself off, and I'll pick a date and I'll quit," Ware said.
