Semi Crashes Into Greenville House
DARKE COUNTY -- An elderly couple is rocked out of their bed after a semi truck slams into their Greenville home. It happened Tuesday morning on Pine St. and Central Ave.
In a pile of debris in the living, a few pictures still hung on the wall. The couple was on the other side of that wall when a semi burst into their home. Patricia White tells ABC 22/ FOX45's Amber Watson that her house shook and she heard a big boom. At first she thought a tree fell on her house.
"I just saw open space and I though mercy what has happened. My husband came out and I told him our living room is gone honey. Then we found out that a truck went through and tore the living room out," said White.
Twenty-eight years of memories built in this home, now left in pieces. Witnesses tell us a semi-truck was heading west on Pine St. and a woman driving at the intersection didn't stop at a stop sign. That caused the truck driver to lose control. First the truck hit the car then went off the road, driving through the house, hitting a garage and shed.
"The semi driver said he didn't have no where to go," said White.
The tanker truck carrying carbon dioxide came to a rest in an alley behind the house. Greenville Fire Chief Mark Wolf tells us the CO2 was secure, but they had to work quick to clean up a diesel spill.
"We did have a fuel leak from the truck in excess of 25 gallons of diesel fuel and our main concern is securing the structure after we took care of the folks in the accident," said Wolf.
Both drivers are expected to be OK, but neighbors tell us they have growing concerns about this road and the heavy traffic.
"It could have very easily of been our house. It's just right across the street. They don't slow down they just come through and and they treat it like a drag strip. There needs to be a speed trap or something," said Brittany Brown.
"I just thank God that me and my husband are alright and neither one got hurt," said White. A quarter of the house was knocked away by the semi. Right now just a few wooden planks are holding up that side of the house. The couple cannot go back inside. They say they plan to stay with other family while they rebuild.
DARKE COUNTY -- A semi tractor-trailer has crashed into a home this morning in Greenville.
The house, at the corner of Central Avenue and Pine Street, has sustained extensive damage.
Reporter Amber Watson says a woman driving a car is suspected of failing to stop at a stop sign, and the male truck driver reportedly swerved to miss her, hit a car, the house and a garage.
Both drivers were transported to hospitals. The truck driver is expected to be OK. The woman's condition is not yet known.
The man and woman in the home were uninjured.
Amber Watson says she spoke to the woman who was asleep at the time of the crash. She said she heard the loud boom and thought a tree hit the house. When she came out of the bedroom, however, she saw that her living room was gone.
